ST. LOUIS – Dozens gathered for a “Tall People Meetup” event Friday evening at the Second Story Speakeasy in south St. Louis. The first-of-its-kind event offered a dedicated space for tall individuals to connect, socialize and build a community.
On Friday, Second Story Speakeasy invited men taller than 6 feet and women taller than 5 feet, 8 inches (both considered “tall” by AmericanTall.com height standards) who were eager to congregate and meet others with similar experiences.
The event aimed to promote visibility and belonging for tall people in the St. Louis area who may feel like outliers in everyday social settings due to their height.
Event organizer Leah Brandon-Akannan told FOX 2 she was motivated by her own experiences as a tall woman in St. Louis and the lack of spaces designed for tall individuals.
“It’s about visibility, belonging, and creating a space where people don’t have to shrink themselves literally or socially,” said Leah. “My biggest hope is that I create a space that is affirming and casual. I want people who are tall to feel like they can be big and take up space, and be okay about it.”
