'It's important to stand tall': Six-foot-five beauty queen nabs international crown
Chandler Grieve and Jeff Lawrence, CTV Vancouver Island
Published Tuesday, August 9, 2016 6:31PM PDT
Last Updated Tuesday, August 9, 2016 6:34PM PDTAt 6’5”, Lauren Bath knows what it’s like to stand out in a crowd.
And as Victoria, B.C.’s newest beauty queen, she’s rising above the gawkers to inspire other vertically blessed women to stand proud.
Last month in New Orleans, Bath was crowned the winner of Miss Tall International, a pageant aimed at celebrating taller-than-average women.
She’s been towering over others since high school, and says it wasn’t until she was 19 that she joined the Vancouver chapter of Tall Clubs International, the pageant’s umbrella organization.“I grew a lot as a teenager, so I was usually the tallest girl and taller than most of the guys,” says Bath. “It’s something you have to get used to, for sure.”
Being able to see others at eye level was an empowering experience, and Bath was eventually nominated by her club to participate in the 2016 pageant.
“It’s a great opportunity to make friends and network with other tall women. It’s a great support system,” she says.
Much like a beauty pageant, contestants in the event are judged on intelligence, talent and finesse – and must meet a 5’10” height requirement.
After competing against women from Canada and the United States, Bath was crowned the winner.
“It was a very exciting moment,” she recalls. “It’s quite an honour to represent the club.”
Outside of the pageant world, there are everyday irritations Bath must deal with that most take for granted. For one thing: No, she doesn’t play basketball, and never has.
Being stopped by strangers several times a day for pictures is also a common occurrence, but it doesn’t bother Bath one bit.
“I choose to take it in a positive light. It’s really led to a lot of neat opportunities. I think I’ve engaged with a lot of people who I wouldn’t have talked to or met if I wasn’t the height that I am,” she says.
Other shortfalls include difficulty getting into some vehicles, and having to custom order clothes that she can’t find anywhere on Vancouver Island.
But Bath says ascending to the crown has given her voice new heights – and she’s ready to use it.
“I would say to girls and women who are tall or above average that aren’t necessarily comfortable with their height that it’s really important to stand tall,” she says. “The world is going to look at you, so be beautiful and give them something to look at.”
As winner of Miss Tall International, Bath will represent all of the Tall clubs on a global scale for the next year, visiting member clubs in different provinces and states and appearing at various events, according to the organization.

6'11 1/2" Miranda speaks out
'I'm really proud of who I have become': Nearly 7-foot-tall Regina woman embraces positive thinking
'Be kind to your body, because it's the only one you are going to get'
Nichole Huck · CBC News · Posted: Apr 30, 2018 6:00 AM CT | Last Updated: April 30
Miranda Weber has always had to deal with high expectations. At six feet 11-and-a-half inches, the 18 year old from Regina is the tallest of a very tall family. Her grandfather and mother both stood six feet eight inches tall. Her uncle is six-foot-ten.
Miranda's mother Kathy says she always knew her daughter was destined for great heights. "She was never going to be a point guard or a setter, she was destined to be someone who had stature," she said. A doctor had once predicted Weber would peak at five-foot-nine, then it was changed to six-foot-five. "Here I am," Miranda said with a laugh.
Early expectations
In Elementary school Miranda stood six to eight inches taller than her classmates. "In grade three I was the size of a seventh grader," she said.
Know who you are and be kind to your body because it's the only one you are going to get - Miranda Weber
That additional stature brought heightened expectations from adults. "She'd be playing at the playground and someone would come over and say she's too big for that. People would expect her to act older than her age," Kathy said.
Miranda became accustomed to the tell-tale tingle in her legs, a sign that she was about to have another growth spurt. "I would be very clumsy and unbalanced, think of it as being on a pair of stilts," Miranda said.
She has used her height to her advantage for volleyball. She played with the Saskatchewan Renegades volleyball team. Now she is studying kinesiology at the University of Regina with the hopes of one day becoming a sport psychologist.
Following in her mother's big footsteps
Kathy smiles as she listens to her daughter talk about wearing cowgirl boots to her graduation ceremony. For Kathy it's a sign of confidence, something she herself has worked hard to develop.
"Thankfully I've embraced being a tall woman. I'm really proud of who I have become and I'm able to showcase that with my daughter," Kathy said.
That confidence shines through in the advice Miranda offers to other young women.
"Believe in yourself, know your talents, know who you are and be kind to your body, because it's the only one you are going to get."

Clothing Canada
Here is a - sadly - rather short list of Canadian companies that cater to tall(er) ladies. I know that there are quite a few of you out there, but I guess the number is not big enough after all. Thankfully most of you should be able to order from American companies. Good luck.

Dr. Nicole Forrester, 6'3 1/2"
Never say never because while we may have Life planned out, Life might have things differently planned for us. That is my athletic story.
I was born in Toronto, Ontario but grew up in the country, in the small village of Cookstown whose population is smaller than most high schools (population 800 people). As a child I only wished one day I could compete in the Olympic Games, but nothing in my youth of swinging from the monkey bars or participating in extracurricular sports in school would have ever told me that this wish would come to fruition.
However, on one fateful day Life would share its plans for me. While working at McDonald's restaurant at the age of 17 years old, a coach (Dave Hunt) from the University of Toronto saw my "never ending long legs" and wondered if I'd like to learn how to high jump. He introduced me to Carl Georgevski, who in turn introduced me to the High Jump. And the rest they say is history! I earned a full athletic scholarship to the University of Michigan and would be coached for the majority of my athletic career (even years after I graduated) by James Henry, the head coach of the Women's Track & Field program. That "fateful day" would prove to change the course of my life forever.
I am an Olympian and an 8-time Canadian Track & Field Champion in the High Jump. I have represented Canada on 20 national teams. I am the reigning Commonwealth Games gold medalist, as well as a Commonwealth Games bronze medalist, Pan American Games silver and bronze medalist, Francophone Games silver and bronze medalist, and a World University Games silver medalist. And if you had told me when I was a kid that I would become the athlete I am today, I wouldn't have believed it! Never say never.
On an aside, I'm also a nerd. I am an avid reader and have an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Ironically, the more I learn the more I realize how much I don't know. I hold a doctoral degree in the area of sport psychology from Michigan State University, specializing in high performance For more than 15 years, I have committed myself to the understanding and implementation of high performance sport as an athlete, as well as a scholar and a professional. It's no surprise that my research area of interest is looks at how elite athletes are able to make the leap – from Good to Great.
My passion off the track is simply to improve the culture of sport in Canada, where the power of sport beyond the podium is embodied and well understood by all Canadians.
Thank you for stopping in to learn a little about me. But, most importantly thank you for your support. None of us can achieve all that we do in life without the emotional and caring support of those around us!
Dr. Forrester

Silver Jeans
Silver Jeans
Tall women's jeans with up to 36 inch inseams
Established in 1991, Silver Jeans Co.’s rich history and family heritage are what make us truly one of a kind. The company is an extension of Western Glove Works, which was founded by the first generation Silver family in 1921 and holds the spot as the second oldest privately held denim producer in North America. Translation: the Silvers have been designing denim for nearly a century. So yeah, you could say we know a thing or two about jeans.
Fit is at the core of everything we do, and it has been from the get-go. Our first silhouette, a unisex jean called the "Frisco," launched in 1991 and went on to sell 2 million pairs. And that was just the beginning.
Since then, our collection has expanded to include a variety of fits for literally every body. Straight, curvy, tall, short, slim, muscular or somewhere in between, our men’s, women’s and plus size lines integrate every iteration of a jean imaginable. Seriously. And it helps that our design team is made of real people, with real bodies, of all shapes and sizes. So we’re not just designing jeans for you, we’re designing them for ourselves. We live in our Silvers, and we think you should, too.
Our roots in workwear mean quality and craft is in our genes (pun intended). With an emphasis on skill and unrivaled attention to detail, our denim is built to last - premium, high-quality fabrics, reinforced stitching techniques, rivets and buttons with incredible strength. Our jeans are crafted with integrity, authenticity and most of all, sustainability. While other pairs you own might end up in a landfill, ours will live in your drawer for years to come, and like some of the best things, get even better with age.

Tony Shoes
Tony Shoes
I would like to thank you for visiting our site. People always ask me, Tony, why are you called "The Real Shoe Shop"? Well, hopefully the following story will clear things up once and for all.Tony's began a long time ago. It was 1937 in Montreal, Canada.
Giantonio Fargnoli was a hard working, enthusiastic Italian from the "Old Country", who believed in service and quality. He set up a shop on Greene Avenue, as a shoe repair first, but soon began to work as a retailer. There was one small problem, there were too many Tony Shoes.
Giantonio...Tony, was one step ahead of the others, he believed that there was only one Tony, and he was the one. The shop became THE REAL TONY SHOE SHOP!
It was then, seventy years ago, that this Montreal landmark was born. Giantonio eventually passed the shop over to his son Eddie "The Fireball" Fargnoli, who in turn passed the shop over to his son Anthony.
The shop is still run by Tony today, in grandfather Giantonio's memory - with dedication to service and quality. In addition, you may find Robbie Fargnoli in the store and he has taken the family business one "step" further by becoming a Board-Certified Pedorthist. Board-Certified Pedorthists (C.Peds) provide services that contribute to the treatment of foot injury, deformity or disease.
Even though today we are officially called Chaussures Tony Shoes Inc., we still cling to the traditions that made us what we are today.
