In 1978 Dawne Gutteridge opened CRISPINS Shoes in Chiltern Street ,London W1, specialising in elegant shoes for larger sizes and named it appropriately after St Crispins, the patron saint of shoemakers.
Canadian born, Dawne came to England in the 1960s and settled happily in London. She shortly came across a problem she had not encountered back home. In England she could not find fashionable shoes to fit her size 9 feet. In total frustration and “virtually bare-foot”, she decided to tackle the problem herself.
Initially shoe manufactures were dubious and did not believe there was a market for fashionable quality shoes over size 8. It was an uphill struggle, but gradually she persuaded their designers to make beautiful shoes in Crispins’ larger sizes.
Research proved there were vast numbers of women and young girls with long feet who had never been able to find well-designed shoes in larger sizes…
Since those early days Crispins has flourished. Every year our dedicated buying team travels extensively throughout Europe and America seeking new manufacturers who will make high quality, comfortable and fashionable shoes and boots so every season we can introduce an exciting new collection assembled from top international designers.
Over the years the company has built up a reputation for individual customer care and understanding of the particular needs of our clientele. For visitors to the shop the personal service in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere makes buying shoes a real pleasure.

Agnès Cushnie joined shortly after, using her expertise in the fashion industry to further develop the idea into a business model. A career in marketing and creative design helped to hone her craft, in particular a ten year tenure as head of the Agnes Valentine fashion label.
Actress and TV presenter Marcy Oni completes the team. An influencer in her own right, she uses her footprint in social media to understand and respond to customer needs in emerging markets.
