About Long Elegant Legs

I don’t remember the day of the week or the weather, but I do remember having on pants that were way too short. On this day the idea of Long Elegant Legs was born.

Reaching my adult height of 5’10” in 8th grade, I was always in the back row for pictures, bottom of the pyramid in gym, and, worst of all, had no pants that were long enough. My grandmother taught me to sew, which was a blessing. Together, she and I made most of my wardrobe. As I got older and had less time to sew, I sought out tall specialty clothing stores. While the pants were long enough, and the sleeves on the tops reached my wrists, I found the styles to be downright dowdy. This needed to change!

Together with my husband Ron, I launched Long Elegant Legs in the fall of 1991. We have many customers who have shopped with us since then. Now in our third decade of clothing the tall woman, we pride ourselves on offering exclusive, high quality styles, with a fit meant just for a tall woman. From jeans to body shaping pants, trousers to dresses, and blouses to jackets, we have you covered.

Back in 1955 Henry "Bud" & Marcia Ungar were married in Toledo, Ohio. After Dad cut his teeth with Wohl Shoe Co. of St Louis, MO Marcia decided it was time to move to Cleveland to be near her sister, Sue. So it was that my parents, Bud & Marcia, ended up in Cleveland in 1957with a dilemma. Where was Marcia to buy shoes for her size 10 ½ narrow feet?

Rather than searching far and wide they decided to open their own shoe store in the beautiful Old Arcade in the heart of downtown Cleveland. In February of 1958 – on a shoestring budget (pun intended) - Mar-Lou Shoes (named after my mom, Marcia Lou!) was born. What a sigh of relief for Marcia's poor, aching feet! Specializing solely in women's size 10 and up, by 1972 the company grew into a two store operation with an east side location in Richmond Heights. By 1984 a third store, Revelations, was added in Cleveland Heights and by 1994 a fourth store was in the mix in North Randall. Through the course of the ensuing decade all four stores were folded into one large store in Lyndhurst – where we continue today.

For the first 20 years of business we carried exclusively larger sizes for women. Dad was a master at designing shoes for the taller woman. He quite literally dreamt up designs; heels, fabrics, treatments, soles, colors and textures, put them on paper and manufactured them using the finest of American, Spanish and Italian shoemakers. He owned brands such as Balenciaga, Tall Girl Custom Originals, Piccolinos and more. To this day customers strut to our store with these labels emblazoned on old pairs of quality shoes. We have many customers who have literally shopped with us since 1958 and tens of thousands who have shopped with us since the 1960's. Every week we add hundreds of satisfied customers to the roll!

CENTREVILLE - Women come in all shapes and sizes, but statuesque is not often a size choice available off the rack in department stores. Growing up, Helen Pappas and her mother Diane Pappas, of Centreville, realized these frustrations far too often.

"How often would we venture to the mall for school clothes," said her mother, "and return only with an eyeshadow or bangle bracelets."

After graduating college, Helen Pappas, who stands 6'4", decided to do something that would make clothing for taller women more accessible.

Pappas' mother was quick to join her efforts, "as her mother, I suffered along with her," she said.

The two formed a partnership in 2012 that has grown from a basement shop to an internationally known boutique. The store's focus is on providing stylish and high-quality garments that are specially tailored to fit the frames of women 6'0" and over. Many of their garments are handmade in the USA.

The company's clients are mostly women between the ages of 16 and 35 and they currently offer the longest jeans sold in the United States at a 41 inch inseam. Their client list includes models, WNBA players and coaches. Satisfied clients are the heart of the Pappas' business.

"Thank you for the hard work and courage to market to a segment of the population that the 'big stores' seem to ignore pointedly," said Carrie Livingston of Florida, in a recent letter to Talltique. "You deserve the support of all 'big' girls in the U.S. and abroad, and the rewards of growing a much-needed business."

Helen Pappas is responsible for the design and personally fits all of the customers that comes into her store. Diane Pappas assists with fittings, alterations, public relations and most importantly is the her daughter's support system.

"We often see mothers and daughters come in together, said Pappas, "it can be a very emotional experience."

"It's important to let women know they have these options available to them," said Diane Pappas.
